The short version
Midjourney generally produces the more striking, artistic output and is the safer default when visual quality is the priority. Leonardo AI gives you a genuinely usable free tier and more granular control, which matters when you're iterating on a specific brand look on a budget.
Output quality
Midjourney's images tend to have stronger composition, lighting and "wow factor" out of the box, especially for anything stylised or conceptual. Leonardo's output quality has closed the gap significantly and is very strong for product mockups, game-style assets and realistic scenes, but Midjourney still edges it for pure artistic polish.
Cost and access
This is where the comparison flips. Midjourney has no meaningful free tier — you're paying from day one, and it runs primarily through Discord (with a newer web app), which some marketers find clunky. Leonardo gives you real daily generation tokens for free, plus a proper web interface with fine-grained model and preset controls.
Control and consistency
If you need to keep a consistent character, product or style across a whole campaign, Leonardo's image-guidance and custom-model tools give you more levers to pull. Midjourney has improved consistency features too (character reference, style reference) but they can take more prompt-engineering effort to get right.
Licensing for commercial use
Both tools support commercial use on paid plans — always check the specific plan tier's terms before using generated images in paid ad campaigns, since licensing details do change between plan tiers and over time.
Our verdict
- Choose Midjourney if: visual impact is the priority and budget isn't the main constraint — hero campaign visuals, brand key art.
- Choose Leonardo AI if: you need to iterate a lot on a budget, want more control over consistency, or are producing higher volumes of product/mockup imagery.
Many marketing teams end up using both — Leonardo for volume and iteration, Midjourney for the handful of hero images that need to look their absolute best.
